DIY: Easy and Cheap Paw Print Ornaments

What is more cute and a better keepsake than a personalized ornament with your dogs pawprint on it! Of course there are quite a few ornament kits available to buy but we wanted to find an even easier and more customizable version because not everyone wants a big white plaster ornament on their tree. These can be made in any colors to match any decor and we even gave them out as party favors last year at a doggie birthday party. They also take less than 10 minutes to make. Easy, cheap, no mess, and fast!

Supply List
1 package of Sculpey oven baked clay
1 toothpick
1 ribbon

Directions

Unwrap Sculpey clay and warm it in the microwave for 10-20 seconds (I warmed mine for 20 to get it more squishy and pliable). Use your hands to soften it and form into a ball.

Take a rolling pin and use parchment paper to roll it out until it is about ¼” thick.

Borrow your dogs paw (treats are suggested) and help them push a paw into the clay. *Tip: Lift their other front leg so they bear more weight on the paw in the clay.

If you are happy with the paw print impression, take a round glass or cookie cutter and press clay to make a circle. Remove excess clay and smooth edges.

If you mess up, you can always ball up the clay and roll it out again for another go. *Tip: you can smooth out the clay a little too if you don’t like nail prints.

Use a spoon handle or butter knife to create a slit above the pawprint for the ribbon
Use a toothpick to gently poke the year and name.

Preheat oven to 275 degrees and bake pawprint for 15 minutes per 1/4'” thickness. Clay can be baked on parchment paper on a cookie sheet or glass dish.

Allow the paw-print ornament to cool, then add ribbon and admire!

  1. Thank you for this Zoey. I was going to look for a kit of some kind to do Molly and Juices' paw prints. Now I can do it myself. <3

    1. Yay! Let me know how they turn out :) You might want to play around with the microwave times for softening for the featherweight pups. We helped add a little pressure for Zoey's paw to make it stand out more.
